After President Biden’s shock exit from the race on Sunday and his immediate endorsement of the vice president, the majority of the Democratic elite rushed to rally behind Harris — but Obama was a notable exception.
“Obama is very upset because he knows he can’t win,” the Biden family source told the The Post.
“Obama knows she’s just incompetent — the border czar who never visited the border, saying all immigrants should have health insurance. She can’t navigate the mines ahead of her.”
“When you’re running for president, there are things you can and can’t say.”
The turning point for Biden, 81, came after his disastrous performance against Trump in a televised debate in Atlanta last month — which, The Post first revealed, was part of an “elaborate set-up” to oust him from the race.
However, there are not high hopes for a televised debate between Trump and Harris. While Biden was still in the race, a second debate was scheduled for September 10.
“Wait until the debate… He can’t debate. She will put her foot in her mouth about Israel, Palestine, Ukraine. He’s going to say something really stupid,” the source said.
According to the source, Obama’s hope was to oust Biden, and a New York Times op-ed by George Clooney calling for him to step down was part of that plan.
But top Democratic Party officials didn’t count on Biden immediately endorsing Harris, and “Obama was shocked” when the president endorsed her, according to reports.
After Biden’s ouster, Obama wanted Arizona senator and former astronaut Mark Kelly “at the top of the ticket” when the Democratic National Convention takes place next month, the source said.
Obama is “furious” that things haven’t gone his way, “so he’s not on board with the Democratic Party’s endorsement of Harris,” the Biden source added.
Another well-placed Democratic source said: “Obama being surprised by a smart policy decision really makes sense when combined with his personal inability to see politics beyond his unique, immediate interests.
“Obama always thinks he’s the smartest and coolest guy in the room. After all, he’s friends with George Clooney.”
