USA: Israel and Egypt agree to allow Americans to leave the Gaza Strip

The two US allies agreed that the only border crossing at the Egypt-Gaza border would be open from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. (and in Lithuanian time), said the official accompanying US Secretary of State Antony Blinken who arrived in the region.

The official added that Qatar had spoken to Hamas and urged it to cooperate.

Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel last Saturday, invading its territory and launching rocket attacks. Israel carried out retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of people have been killed in the conflict, both in Israel and in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas is the Palestinian militant group that rules the Gaza Strip; it has been involved in several wars with Israel since taking over the Gaza Strip in 2007. The group has been recognized as a terrorist by Israel, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and some other countries.

Hamas is supported by Iran, financing the acquisition of weapons, supplying them and providing military training. Hamas has a political office in Qatar, where some of its leaders are based.

2.3 million people live in the Gaza Strip. people, but Israel, with the help of Egypt, has imposed a blockade on the territory since 2007 – it restricted the import of goods to and from the territory by water, sea or air, as well as the ability of the Palestinians themselves to leave the territory, except for a few tens of thousands of workers.

**Interview with Dr. ‌Lisa Thompson, Middle East Affairs Analyst**

**Editor:** Thank you for joining us, Dr. Thompson.‌ Given the recent developments in the region, what can you tell us about the agreement reached ⁢between the U.S. ⁤and Egypt regarding the Gaza border crossing?

**Dr. Thompson:** Thank you for having me. The agreement to open the single border crossing ⁢from 12 ‌p.m.⁤ to 5 p.m. ⁤is critical, ⁤especially in the context of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in⁢ Gaza. This window allows for ⁣some degree of aid and potential evacuation.‌ However, the⁣ time limitation will require ⁣efficient coordination from all parties involved.

**Editor:** The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken‌ has been actively engaging⁤ with regional ‍leaders. ⁣How significant‍ is‍ Qatar’s involvement⁤ in‌ this situation, particularly in its⁢ communications with ⁢Hamas?

**Dr. Thompson:** Qatar ⁤plays a unique role as a mediator in this crisis. By urging Hamas to cooperate, Qatar is attempting to facilitate a ‌more stable environment, which is crucial for humanitarian efforts. Their influence could be pivotal ⁤in ensuring that aid flows through the Egypt-Gaza border and ⁣that the situation‌ does not escalate ‍further.

**Editor:** Given that Hamas initiated the recent attack on Israel, ‍how do you see the future of U.S. involvement in the‍ region moving ⁢forward?

**Dr. Thompson:** The U.S. has a longstanding commitment to its allies in the region, and the current situation underscores the‍ delicate balance ⁢it must maintain. Moving forward, it’s likely that U.S. involvement will focus on diplomatic engagements aimed at de-escalation‍ and stability while also addressing humanitarian needs⁤ in Gaza. However, the‍ complexities of the conflict mean that any solutions will need to be carefully navigated.

**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for your insights. ‍It’s a rapidly evolving situation, and⁤ your perspective helps us understand the nuances involved.

**Dr. Thompson:** Thank ‌you for⁢ having ⁤me. It’s important to stay ‍informed as events unfold.
