Federal auto regulators have announced an investigation into a recent recall of nearly 43,000 cars, following an error with cracked fuel injectors that they say can cause gas leaks and lead to engine fires.
In a summary report dated Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wrote that it was opening an investigation into a Ford Bronco and Escape vehicle recalled by the automaker’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.
According to a letter to Ford from NHTSA, the bug affected regarding 42,652 (or 1%) of SUVs produced in 2022 and 2023.
The safety regulator posted documents online announcing the investigation just two days following the recall was made public.
As of April 12, NHTSA had not reported any injuries related to the recall.

22,270 Bronco Sport vehicles from 2022 and 2023
20,382 escape vehicles from 2022
All of the recalled SUVs have 1.5-liter engines, NTHSA said.
