USA: Execution of a death row inmate in Alabama – He had killed a truck driver 2024-07-21 10:10:53

Keith Edmund Gavin was executed by lethal injection and died at 18:32 (local time, 02:32 Greek time), according to the statement.

Gavin, who had pleaded not guilty, had been convicted of murdering William Clayton, a 68-year-old lorry driver and father of seven, as he withdrew money from an ATM to go out to dinner with his wife.

At the time, Gavin was on parole following serving 17 years in prison for a previous murder he had committed in Illinois.

Two more executions have taken place in Alabama this year, one of them by nitrogen inhalation, a world first. This execution drew strong criticism, with the UN comparing it to a form of “torture”.

Earlier this week the US Supreme Court stayed the planned execution of a Texas death row inmate following an appeal by his lawyers.

In 2023 there were 24 executions in the US, while so far this year there have been 10 executions.

The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 states. Six others (Arizona, California, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee) have imposed moratoriums on executions by governor’s order.
