The United States sued Apple. The tech giant is accused of having “implemented a strategy based on anti-competitive practices that harm both consumers and developers.”

Merrick Garland, Attorney General of the United States, said: “The Department of Justice, along with 15 states and the District of Columbia, sued Apple in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey for violating Section 2 of the Sherman antitrust law. Over the past two decades, Apple has become one of the most successful publicly traded companies in the world. Today, its net income exceeds the gross domestic product of 100 countries combined. This is largely due to part of the success of the iPhone, Apple’s flagship product. For more than a decade, iPhone sales have represented the majority of Apple’s annual revenue. Today, Apple’s share of the American market for high-end smartphones exceeds 70%.

The plaintiffs want to shake the digital fortress of Apple Inc., which is working to ensure that the iPhone and other popular products such as the iPad, Mac and Apple Watch can only work with programs and Apple accessories.

This strategy has helped Apple generate annual revenue of nearly $400 billion and, until recently, a market value of more than $3 trillion.
