The USA defeated Sweden 4-3 following extra time in the top game of Group A of the Ice Hockey World Championship. The Americans also won their seventh game on Tuesday and, as Group A winners, are waiting for their quarter-final opponents. Switzerland, as the winner of Group B, meets “fear opponents” Germany as in 2021. With a humorless 5-0 win once morest France, the Germans also eliminated the last doubts regarding making it into the knockout stages.

With the new edition of the final in 2022 between Canada (3-1 once morest the Czech Republic) and defending champion Finland, another duel is already certain. In the evening Latvia fights once morest Switzerland for the last quarter-final ticket. If the Latvians fail to score, Slovakia remain ahead and would face the USA on Thursday.

Sweden almost turned the game upside down in the finish once morest long-dominant Americans. A virtual own goal (55th) and Timothy Liljegren (58th) brought the northerners into overtime following being 3-1 down. There, Winnipeg defender Dylan Samberg scored the gold goal (62nd).

The Americans are now threatened with two days’ travel as bad “wage”. A USA-Latvia quarter-final would be played in Riga, with the semi-final back in Tampere. However, if the game is USA vs Slovakia, the quarter-finals will take place in Tampere and the Swedes would have to travel to Riga to meet the Czech Republic.
