A 41-year-old man was found dismembered in the US last month. An Alabama woman was arrested on suspicion of murder.
The Alabama Department of Law Enforcement confirmed to PEOPLE that authorities found the “dismembered and decapitated” body of a 41-year-old man in his home in Slocomb, Alabama, on Tuesday, August 27.
Authorities responded to the call after a co-worker of the victim reported to the sheriff’s office that he had not shown up for work. An ALEA agent who arrived at the home said they smelled a “strong odor of decomposition” coming from the car and saw several trash bags inside, the outlet reported during a bail hearing. There, they found human remains in several bags in the car, an electric chain saw, knives and cleaning supplies, and blood on a box of formula in a diaper bag.
The couple have a 4-year-old child together, the coroner confirmed to PEOPLE. Prosecutors and investigators suspect the child, who has autism and unspecified disabilities, was present during the alleged killing.
During the court hearing, the woman claimed she acted in self-defense, but the judge denied her bail.
