The United States warned on Wednesday that it is “running out of patience” waiting for Venezuelan authorities to publish the voting records supporting Nicolás Maduro’s victory, as proclaimed by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
«Our patience and that of the international community is running out, the wait for the Venezuelan electoral authorities to be sincere and publish the complete and detailed data of this election so that everyone can see the results is running out.“,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said at a news conference.
Kirby said that Joe Biden’s government “shares” the conclusions published by the Carter Center, a US organization invited by Venezuela as an observer, which considered that Sunday’s elections were not democratic.
The spokesman also said that the protests that have taken place in Venezuela these days are due to the fact that “The Venezuelan people are taking to the streets to demand that their votes be counted” and stated that “You can’t blame them for that«.
«We have serious concerns about the arrest warrants that Maduro and his representatives could issue today against opposition leaders.“Kirby said, condemning “political violence and repression of any kind.”
«The international community is watching and we will respond accordingly.“, he warned.
At a separate press conference, State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel also said that the patience of the United States and the international community is running out, and stressed that “more and more countries” are asking the CNE to publish the voting records.
Patel recalled that the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold an extraordinary meeting in Washington on Wednesday to address the situation in Venezuela.
The CNE declared Maduro’s victory early Monday morning with 51% of the votes, but the opposition claims to have in its possession 85% of the votes cast in the elections, which would give a wide margin of victory to its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, who stood in place of María Corina Machado, who was disqualified from running.
The UN, the European Union, the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Argentina and Spain, among others, have asked Venezuelan electoral authorities to publish the voting records to verify Maduro’s alleged victory, while thousands of people have taken to the streets of Venezuela to protest what they consider electoral fraud.
