Brian Nichols, the US Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere, spoke out on social media on Tuesday about what he described as “the continued harassment” by state security forces against opposition figures.
In his X accountthe Joe Biden administration official warned against such actions and noted that they are “worrying,” especially weeks before the presidential elections.
“The latest arrests and continued harassment of members of Venezuela’s democratic opposition are deeply concerning ahead of the July 28 presidential election. Venezuelan candidates and activists must be able to campaign peacefully and without intimidation,” Nichols wrote on the social network.
Her complaint comes amid the arrests by state security forces of members of the political party Vente Venezuela, led by María Corina Machado, winner of the October 2023 primaries.
To date, at least ten activists from Vente Venezuela are detained in violation of the Barbados agreement signed last year.
