US warns any Israeli truce in Gaza would benefit Hamas

The truce “would allow Hamas to rest, recuperate and prepare to continue its terrorist attacks against Israel,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.

“You can understand why this is an intolerable situation for Israel, like any other country that has suffered such a brutal terrorist attack and continues to see the threat of terrorism right on its border,” he said.

Mr. Miller said that the United States is separately trying to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and that the US envoy, David Satterfield (David Satterfield), is working intensively on the ground to provide aid.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Monday called for faster aid to the Gaza Strip and said the bloc was considering calling for a halt to Israel’s actions against the Islamist group Hamas on humanitarian grounds.

“Personally, I think that a humanitarian pause is necessary so that humanitarian aid can arrive and be distributed, seeing that half of the population of the Gaza Strip has been displaced from their homes,” Mr. Borrell said during talks with EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
