Finding new strategies to combat fentanyl trafficking should therefore be the central theme of this visit to Mexico by the US Treasury Secretary. For Janet Yellen this week, it will be a matter of taking a further step in cooperation between the two countries and the private sector, with the objective of curbing transactions and financing linked to drug trafficking. In this fight, the American government needs the help of Mexico, because it is there that the chemicals that come from Asia are transformed into fentanyl pellets. And before arriving in the United States, it is through Mexico that drugs and trafficking proceeds pass.
In anticipation of his visit with Janet Yellen, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also promised that he would put the migration issue back on the table. For a long time, he has been demanding from the United States a development plan for the entire Central and South American region as well as the Caribbean. The only way, according to him, to slow down migration is by tackling the causes: poverty and inequalities.
