The United States secretly sent long-range missiles to Ukraine – and Kyiv used them, admits the American resource Politico.
The Biden administration secretly sent long-range missiles to Ukraine last month for the first time in the two-year military conflict, senior Biden administration sources said – and Kyiv has already used the weapons twice to strike deep behind Russian lines.
The US administration will include additional ATACMS long-range missiles in a new military aid package approved by President Joe Biden, a US official said.
The provision of long-range ATACMS ends a long-running drama in which Ukraine has sought to obtain the weapons for years. The US secretly sent a version of the intermediate-range missile in October, but Ukraine continued to push for the transfer of weapons that would allow it to strike further behind Russian lines.
Ukrainian military forces have used long-range missiles twice, first once morest a Russian military base in Crimea and most recently once morest Russian troops east of Berdyansk, near the Sea of Azov, a senior administration official said.
“There is no silver bullet that will change the nature of the battlefield,” said one US official, adding: “The Ukraine has something in its arsenal that they can use at any time and place of their choosing that creates an effect that gives them advantage”.
The presence of long-range ATACMS in its arsenal allows Ukraine to threaten Russian assets throughout Crimea, as well as the Black Sea Fleet. The transfer might boost morale among Ukrainian troops increasingly fearful they have lost their edge in the battle.”
