In the middle of last month, the Michigan nuclear-powered submarine (SSGN-727) arrived in the Republic of Korea for the first time in six years. A few months later, the Ohio-class submarine was visiting Japan.

Michigan (SSGN-727) has arrived at the port of Yokosuka. The submarine’s visit reflects US commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and complements exercises US forces are conducting jointly with Japanese allies.

Michigan (SSGN-727) is one of 18 Ohio-class submarines and one of four armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles (154) rather than Trident II ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. It was commissioned in 1975 and entered service in 1982.

Guided missile submarines provide offensive and special operations capabilities. With a displacement of over 18,000 tons and a length of 170 meters, the Michigan (SSGN-727) is one of the largest submarines in the world.
