In the US state of Virginia, an attacker killed several people in a supermarket. The authorities said he shot staff and customers in the branch. The alleged shooter is therefore dead.
Several people were killed in an attack at a supermarket in Virginia, police said. The incident occurred in the city of Chesapeake.
A police spokesman did not want to give an exact number of victims, but “less than ten” people died. The suspected shooter is no longer alive.
Investigators search supermarket
The police received an emergency call around 10 p.m. local time, the spokesman said. Upon entering the building, officials found “several dead and several injured.” It is a very big business, the search for other possible victims is still ongoing.
No information was given on the possible motive. It was also unclear how the alleged perpetrator died. There was a suspicion that he might have taken his own life. The police spokesman said that to his knowledge the officers had not been shot at. Recordings in US media showed a large police presence at the scene. The supermarket operator Walmart said in a first reaction that they were shocked by “the tragic event”.
