United States – US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel confirmed that Washington has identified five Israeli units responsible for serious human rights violations, noting that it has not yet imposed sanctions on them.
The spokesman said in a press conference yesterday, Monday: “After a comprehensive operation, we found that five Israeli units were responsible for separate incidents related to gross human rights violations,” explaining that “all of these incidents occurred before October 7.” [2023] “For a long time, none of them occurred in the Gaza Strip.”
He added that “four out of five units have already corrected these violations.” Patel refused to reveal the names of these units, but promised to announce them later.
According to him, the United States and Israel are actively cooperating in this direction, and the Israeli side provides the Americans with all the necessary information regarding possible human rights violations by their army. Without clarifying details regarding the possibility of imposing sanctions, he added: “We are communicating with them… and we will make a decision when the process is completed.”
It is worth noting that the law requires the United States in such cases to stop providing military assistance to units that violate human rights, as a law issued in 1997 by then US Senator Patrick Leahy prevents US foreign aid and training programs affiliated with the Ministry of Defense from going to security units. and foreign military and police that credibly commit human rights abuses.
American media reports had previously spoken regarding the possibility of the American administration imposing sanctions on an Israeli military unit due to human rights violations in the West Bank.
Commenting on this news, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he intends to protect the army from sanctions by all means at his disposal.
