The US State Department published this Friday a list of 20 countries to which it recommends not to travel.

On the four-level scale with which it divides countries according to their risk, the 20 are part of 4, the highest, called “Do not travel”.

The list is made up of the following nations:

– Afghanistan

– Belarus

– Burkina Faso

– North Korea

– Haiti

– Iran

– Irak

– Libya

– Small

– Myanmar

– Niger

– Central African Republic

– Russia

– Syria

– Somalia

– Sudan

– South Sudan

– Ukraine

– Venezuela

– Yemen

The latest country to be added to the list is Niger, after the coup that led to the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum.

General Abdourahmane Tchiani, former head of the Presidential Guard, announced the closure of the borders, due to the deep economic and security crisis in the country, which is facing an increase in the operations of the branches of the State terrorist groups. Islamic and Al Qaeda.

The coup has once again stirred concerns about political instability in Niger, a country that has been rocked by four – now five – coups since it won independence from France in 1960, as well as several failed attempts, the last of them in 2021, days before Bazoum took office.

Two countries from Latin America and the Caribbean appear on the list published by the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the Department of State: Venezuela and Haiti.

“Do not travel to Venezuela due to crime, civil unrest, kidnappings and the arbitrary application of local laws. Reconsider the possibility of traveling due to illegal detentions, terrorism, and deficient health infrastructures,” the State Department said of the South American country.

“On July 27, 2023, the Department of State ordered the release of family members of US government employees and non-emergency US government employees. US citizens in Haiti should leave Haiti as soon as possible by commercial transportation or other available private transportation options, in light of the current security situation and infrastructure challenges. US citizens wishing to leave Port-au-Prince should follow the local news and do so only when it is considered safe,” the government agency continues.

The levels into which the countries are divided are four, of which the fourth is the one that discourages travel and the others are: Level 3, “Reconsider the trip”; Level 2, “Increase precautions”; and Level 1, “Normal precautions”.
