US star Noah Lyles is the new world champion in the 100 meters. The 26-year-old won the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Sunday ahead of Letsile Tebogo from Botswana and Brit Zharnel Hughes. Lyles, who belongs to the same training group as Gina Lückenkemper in the USA, won the world annual best time of 9.83 seconds and was five hundredths of a second ahead of his pursuers.

Defending champion Fred Kerley (USA) missed the final, as did Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs (Italy). Lyles wants to become world champion for the third time in a row over 200 meters in the title fights in Hungary’s capital. As the only German starter over the 100 meters, Julian Wagner was eliminated in the preliminary heat.

Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda remains world champion over 10,000 meters. The defending champion and world record holder prevailed in the final sprint following 27:51.42 minutes. Second was Daniel Simiu Ebenyo from Kenya ahead of Selemon Barega from Ethiopia. In the hammer throw, Canadian Ethan Katzberg surprisingly became world champion with a national record of 81.25 meters.

Sprinter Lückenkemper continues

Gina Lückenkemper only dealt with the fulfilled target and small ailments for a short time. Like the German athletics team, the captain presented herself in solid form at the start of the World Championships, but the hoped-for medal surprise for the German team did not materialize at the weekend. Before Lückenkemper wants to sprint into a World Cup final over 100 meters for the first time this Monday, there was seventh place for heptathlete Sophie Weißenberg and ninth place for long jumper Maryse Luzolo on Sunday.

If European champion Lückenkemper wants to achieve such a placement, she has to improve in the semi-finals on Monday evening (8.35 p.m. on ZDF and on Eurosport). 11.21 seconds in advance was enough for third place and automatic advancement, the slightly handicapped entry into the World Cup was not convincing. Meanwhile, the American co-favourite, Sha’Carri Richardson, did not have to exhaust herself for her 10.92 seconds. In 1997, Melanie Paschke was the last German 100-meter runner to stand in a World Cup final.

Seventh in the heptathlon

There was no festive mood in Budapest on the Hungarian national holiday for the weakened German selection. But there was no reason to be dissatisfied. In the absence of the injured defending champion Malaika Mihambo, Luzolo reached the long jump final. After two invalid attempts, however, it was only enough 6.58 meters, so Luzolo missed three more chances. Disappointed, the 28-year-old put her hands in front of her face.

“It’s a pity that it was ninth place and I only missed the final by four centimetres,” said Luzolo. But following her serious knee injury, you can be very happy with this World Cup. European champion Ivana Vuleta from Serbia now also superiorly won the world title with 7.14 meters. A year ago in Eugene there had only been gold by Mihambo and bronze by the sprint relay around Lückenkemper, which was weakened this time.

There were also hopes of a medal in the heptathlon for a short time. There Sophie Weißenberg was temporarily even on the bronze rank, following the final 800 meters then, despite a personal best, 63 points were missing for the first German medal at this World Cup.

“Pride is far more important,” said Weißenberg, despite a slight disappointment at missing the Olympic standard. As in 2019, the title went to the British Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Weißenberg ended up in seventh place, Vanessa Grimm took 14th place. Other of the few hopes such as the discus throwers Claudine Vita, Shanice Craft and the Olympic silver medalist Kristin Pudenz as well as high jumper Tobias Poyte mastered the qualification and are each in the final of their discipline on Tuesday.
