The Sprint World Champion and Relay Olympic Champion Tori Bowie passed away suddenly in early May. At the time, the cause of death was unclear. It is now clear that the death of the 32-year-old was extremely tragic. Bowie’s agent Kimberly Holland confirmed to US broadcaster CBS News that the sprinter was in labor at the time of death.

It quickly became known that Bowie was eight months pregnant when she died unexpectedly. Now, the autopsy report said Bowie died of complications during childbirth. Bowie was found dead at her home in Winter Garden, Florida.

The daughter did not survive either

USA Today quotes an Orange County coroner as saying it was a “well-developed fetus.” It is also mentioned that Bowie may have suffered complications such as breathing problems and eclampsia. Pregnant women with eclampsia have sudden seizures, which follow preeclampsia. This can lead to detachment of the placenta and/or premature delivery of the baby. US media also report that her unborn daughter Ariana also did not survive.

“We are devastated by the sad news that Tori Bowie has passed away,” her management said in a statement in May. “We lost a customer, a dear friend, a daughter and a sister. (…) We are heartbroken and our prayers are with family and friends.

Bowie won the gold medal in the US relay at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She won silver in the 100 meters and bronze in the 200 meters. The track and field athlete achieved her greatest success in 2017 when she became world champion in the 100 meters and in the relay. Her best time over the 100 meters was 10.78 seconds.
