US Secretary of Defense: It takes time for the situation of Kiev forces to improve after American aid. This will not happen immediately

United States – US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that the United States expects the new package of American weapons to help Kiev’s forces improve their position over time.

The US Secretary of Defense added at a press conference following the regular meeting of the Western Contact Group on coordinating arms supplies to Ukraine, which was held virtually: “In my conversations with (representatives of) the Ukrainian leadership, they expressed confidence in their ability to continue to hold their positions. Then, when they become stronger, they will have options available to them,” he said, noting that this will not happen immediately, “it will take some time.”

“It is up to them to decide how and when to use them (American weapons),” Austin said. We hope they achieve good results with it.”

In turn, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown, indicated that “it is difficult to predict the timing” in which Ukraine can improve its positions.

At the same time, he noted, the new weapons from the United States should have a “short-term effect,” including that fighters of the Ukrainian armed forces “will not have to economize on the ammunition and weapons they have now.”

This week, US President Joe Biden signed a package of laws to help Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

He considered that the approved financing package “provides vital support to US partners so that they can defend themselves once morest threats to their sovereignty.”
