US Secret Service director resigns after criticism over Trump assassination

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on July 23 amid criticism over security lapses at a July 12 political rally in Butler where Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was shot and wounded.

According to sources cited by the television network NBCThe official’s resignation came after several US lawmakers called on her to step down.

Cheatle appeared before a House committee on July 22 and said the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump was the agency’s “biggest operational failure” “in decades.”

The official also took responsibility for her agency’s lapse in “security” and said she was cooperating with ongoing investigations into the attack.

Trump blamed the Biden administration for the attack

For his part, Donald Trump said on July 23 that the government of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris did not “adequately protect” him from the attack he suffered on July 13 in Pennsylvania.

“The Biden-Harris Administration failed to adequately protect me, and I was forced to take a bullet for democracy. It was a great honor to do so!” Trump said in a message shared on his social network, Truth Social.

US President Joe Biden has vowed to “get to the bottom” of the investigation into the attempted assassination of Donald Trump and accepted the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.

“The independent review to get to the bottom of what happened on July 13 continues and I look forward to evaluating its findings. We all know that what happened that day will never happen again. As we move forward, I wish Kim all the best and plan to appoint a new director soon,” the president said in a statement.

Biden took the opportunity to thank Cheatle for her years of service to the U.S. nation, noting that she “selflessly” risked her life to protect the United States.

Attack on Donald Trump

Former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was injured during a rally in ButlerPennsylvania (USA) on Saturday, July 13.

Security officials removed Donald Trump from the stage after gunshots were heard at the venue. The explosions began shortly after Trump began his speech at the event.

In videos posted on social media, Trump was seen holding his ear, where there were traces of blood. The former president later confirmed that a bullet had gone through his right ear.

As he was being evacuated from the scene, his face covered in blood, Trump told his supporters: “Fight, fight, fight,” with his fist raised.

The Butler County (Pennsylvania) district attorney confirmed to the media CBS News that two people died in the shooting, including the attacker.
