US Secret Service chief resigns over Trump assassination attempt

CNN reported, citing sources, that “Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned, amid an investigation into security failures linked to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.”

On Monday, US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said the assassination attempt on former US President and Republican candidate Donald Trump was the biggest failure of the Secret Service in decades.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Tuesday that the House task force investigating the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump will issue a final report by December 13.

“We are forming a special task force in the House of Representatives that will be bipartisan,” Johnson said at a press conference. “The final report from the committee will be issued no later than December 13.”

The US Interior Ministry statement said that US President Joe Biden ordered the Department of Homeland Security, following the events of July 13, 2024, “to conduct an independent security review into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.”

Just two days after the assassination attempt, a scrutiny campaign was launched in the US Secret Service following the shooting of former President Donald Trump, in the “worst security breach” since the assassination attempt on the late President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Trump was the target of an assassination attempt while delivering his speech at an election rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, and a video clip documented the moment of the assassination attempt moments after he took the stage, as the Secret Service escorted him away with blood pouring from the side of his face.

Trump confirmed on social media that he was shot in the “upper part of his right ear,” and Pennsylvania police said one person was killed in the incident and two others were seriously injured.

The FBI identified the Trump shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, and he was killed at the scene by Secret Service agents.
