The United States will strike Afghanistan if there is a threat to national security, said Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
According to him, the Islamic State movement (IS; recognized as a terrorist organization in the Russian Federation and banned) and other terrorist groups are trying to regroup in Afghanistan. The general claims that they continue to pose a threat to the US.
“We are still monitoring the situation, and I will not go into detail regarding how, in what form, with the help of what mechanisms, but we have the means to carry out strike operations if we see a threat emanating from the territory of Afghanistan,” – said Mark Milley, speaking at hearings on the Appropriations Committee of the US House of Representatives.
He also said that Washington will ensure that Afghanistan does not become “a platform from which terrorists will strike at the continental United States.”
The United States withdrew troops from Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, following representatives of the Taliban movement came to power in the country (the organization was recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in the Russian Federation). After that, the Taliban declared the complete independence of Afghanistan.
