The United States has confirmed more than 25,000 cases of monkeypox as of Monday, the latest data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed.
According to CDC data, among US states, California has the highest number of confirmed cases so far with 4,886 cases, followed by New York with 3,881 and Florida with 2,455.
Monkeypox infections are rarely fatal, with most cases resolving within two to four weeks, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that the disease has a fatality rate of around 3 to 6%. However, the CDC noted, immunocompromised people are more likely to suffer severe illness when infected.
Meanwhile, according to a New York Times article, nearly four months following monkeypox was first reported in the United States, the virus is showing promising signs of receding.
“But unfortunately, the number of cases is accelerating in a few states and jurisdictions, including Indiana, Virginia and Massachusetts. Black and Hispanic men make up nearly two-thirds of those infected, but only regarding a quarter of those vaccinated. so far,” the article also states.
