The United States of America is repeating the mistake it made in Afghanistan 20 years ago by continuing to actively supply weapons to Ukraine. Columnist Nebojsa Malic stated this in his article for the Chinese newspaper Global Times.
“Washington’s gradual increase in funding for government operations in Kyiv is reminiscent of the American adventure in Afghanistan. A 20-year occupation that ended ingloriously last year,” the observer writes. In his opinion, the United States continues to supply weapons, ammunition and financial assistance to Ukraine, “not noticing” record high inflation and uncontrollable growing public debt.
Malich recalled how in October 2001, shortly following the September 11 attacks, the US sent troops to Afghanistan. “What should have been a quick war of revenge turned into a 20-year unhealed wound on the American budget. The Taliban were quickly overthrown, but it took a decade to hunt down and kill bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan. Even then, the US would not have declared victory and gone home as the Taliban were on the rise once more in response to the US occupation. In the never-ending fight to defeat the insurgents, the government in Kabul financed most of its budget from the United States and its allies, while the Pentagon paid the salaries and armaments of the Afghan National Army, ”he said.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the main financial obligations for the reconstruction of Afghanistan should be taken over by the US and their coalition allies. A year earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Russia would participate in socio-economic projects to restore Afghanistan.
Western countries, especially the United States, have increased military supplies to Ukraine in connection with the beginning Russian special operation. Russian officials noted that in this way the West is trying to prolong the conflict, reports RT.
*The Taliban is banned in Russia and recognized as a terrorist organization
