PARIS – The United States has decided to rejoin the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and pay its dues. The US, which stopped contributing to Palestine in 2011 in protest at its membership, withdrew its membership in 2018 in protest at the organization’s anti-Israel stance when Donald Trump was president.

In the absence of the United States, China is preparing to rejoin the organization to reduce its influence. US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma handed over the letter to UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay. The proposal will be approved by a vote among the 193 member states at a meeting this month. The return of the US, which is the largest contributor, will be of great benefit to the organization.
