The Secretary of Defense of the United States, Lloyd Austin, reported in a statement that a high-altitude anti-missile defense system (THAAD) and several Patriot surface-to-air rocket batteries will be activated “throughout the region.”

“First, I redirected the movement of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group to the Central Command area of responsibility. This carrier strike group joins the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group, which is currently operating in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. It will further increase our force posture and strengthen our capabilities and ability to respond to a variety of contingencies,” Austin explained.

The decision comes in the midst of a war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group, which began on October 7 with a surprise attack by the Palestinian group that caused more than 1,400 deaths in Israeli territory, most of them civilians.

In response, Israel has bombed the Gaza Strip, de facto controlled by the terrorist organization, where more than 4,300 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died, according to the Islamist movement’s Ministry of Health.

In addition, Hamas is holding about 200 people captive, according to the Israeli military.

For his part, the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, warned the Lebanese Prime Minister, Nayib Mikati, this Saturday that his country’s entry into the war would have “consequences” for the Lebanese people.

The head of US diplomacy highlighted “the importance of respecting the interests of the Lebanese people, who would suffer the consequences if Lebanon is dragged into the conflict caused by the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.”

The State Department reported this telephone conversation in which Blinken expressed his “condolences” to the families of Lebanese civilians “who have tragically lost their lives as a result of the conflict.”

Blinken reiterated the United States’ “continued support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Internal Security Forces, the only legitimate guarantor of Lebanon’s stability and territorial integrity.”
