(CNN) The women’s singles semifinal match was temporarily suspended at the US Open in New York on Wednesday following spectators believed to be environmental activists acted.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) said a man pinned himself to the floor in the stands, and a medical team, the New York Police Department (NYPD) and security personnel were dispatched.

Sports channel ESPN said the man was shouting “environmental issues.”

Gauff (US) and Muchova (Czech Republic), who were facing each other in the semi-finals, were temporarily sent off, but the match was resumed 45 minutes later.

The USTA said in a statement Monday night that three of the four protesters offered no further resistance and were escorted out of the stadium.

“We know that environmental activists use the space for such a large-scale event,” USTA President Allaster said in an interview with CNN. He announced that he would work with the NYPD to prevent a recurrence.
