Ons Jabeur (No. 5) will play his second consecutive Grand Slam semi-final on Thursday in New York.
The Tunisian dominated Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA 46) 6-4 7-6 (7/4) on Tuesday in the first quarter-final of the US Open women’s draw. His next opponent will be Coco Gauff (no 12) or Caroline Garcia (no 17).
Beaten in three sets by the Kazakh Elena Rybakina in a Wimbledon final of which she was the favorite in July, Ons Jabeur has therefore offered itself a new opportunity to write tennis history. At 28, she has the means to become the first Arab to win a major title on Saturday.
The Tunisian had however not shone since her final in London, winning only two matches in three tournaments played on hard courts, and had so far not passed the third round in New York. But his varied game, performing well on grass and on clay, is also perfectly suited to New York conditions.
All was not perfect Tuesday for Ons Jabeur, however, who led 6-4 2-0 before stammering his tennis to find himself back once morest the wall at 3-5 in the second set. Grave of Serena Williams in the 3rd round, Ajla Tomljanovic however flinched in the “money time”, notably committing a fatal double fault in the tie-break.
