US Open: Iga Swiatek crowned for the first time in New York – rts.ch

Iga Swiatek (WTA 1) established her dominance in women’s tennis a little more by winning her first US Open. The Pole beat Ons Jabeur (WTA 5) 6-2 7-6 (7/5) in the final at Flushing Meadows in 1h53 of play.

Already titled twice at Roland-Garros (2020, 2022), Iga Swiatek thus has 3 Grand Slam trophies to her name when she celebrated her 21st birthday on May 31. With the exception of sisters Serena (23 major titles) and Venus Williams (7), only Naomi Osaka (4) did better among active players.

The Pole had however remained discreet since her 2nd coronation in Paris, where she had won a 6th consecutive title on the circuit in less than 4 months. Beaten in the 3rd round at Wimbledon where she had seen her winning streak stop at 37, she had not gone beyond the quarters in her next 3 tournaments.

A loss of diet without consequence

But Iga Swiatek resurfaced at the best time, rising to power in this New York fortnight. She might even have won much more clearly once morest Ons Jabeur, who had already lost in the final of the last Wimbledon once morest Elena Rybakina for her first major final.

The Polish indeed missed 3 balls of 4-0 in the 2nd round, before tensing up. Ons Jabeur was able to take advantage of this to revive, even getting 3 break points which might have changed everything at 4-4.
