US Open: Azarenka excluded from the charity evening – rts.ch

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (WTA 26) was excluded from the charity evening in favor of Ukraine organized at Flushing Meadows, a few days before the start of the US Open (August 27 – September 11).

The former world number 1, winner of the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, had made a commitment to the American federation to take part in the charity evening. But his presence provoked the anger, in particular, of the young Marta Kostyuk (WTA 72). The Ukrainian simply declined her invitation to the event.

Faced with this situation, the American federation made the decision to finally dismiss it. “Over the past 24 hours, following careful consideration and discussion with all parties involved, it has been decided that Victoria Azarenka will not take part in our ‘Tennis Plays for Peace exhibition’. Victoria is a strong leader on the circuit and we appreciate her willingness to participate. Given the sensitivities of Ukrainian players, and the ongoing conflict, we believe we are making the right decision.“.

Azarenka reacted on social media: “Never take for granted the impact that a kind gesture can haveAs a reminder, Russian and Belarusian athletes will be able to take part in the US Grand Slam but under a neutral banner, unlike Wimbledon which had been banned for them.
