An Ohio-class nuclear submarine will enter South Korea, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said. He refused to name the timing of the deployment of the submarine.
“I’m not going to announce any deployment timeline. It will be a model SSBN (nuclear ballistic missile submarine) of the Ohio class, but that’s all I can say, ”he explained on briefing.
Mr. Ryder evaded answering the question of whether the submarine would carry nuclear weapons. “I won’t go into details regarding the specific payload,” he said.
In April, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol met with US President Joe Biden in Washington. Yoon Suk-yeol said that Seoul would use the full power of the alliance with Washington, including American nuclear weapons, in the event of a nuclear attack from Pyongyang. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Biden administration has no plans to redeploy nuclear weapons to the Korean Peninsula.
