US officials: Iranian response may include attacks on Americans in Iraq and Syria

United States – US officials expect the Iranian response to the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian factions movement, Ismail Haniyeh, to come “in the coming days.”

According to the American news network CNN, officials revealed that “the United States expects the Iranian attack to be similar to the April 13 attack on Israel, but it may be larger and more complex.”

They continued: “The Iranian response to Haniyeh’s killing may include attacks by groups on American forces in Iraq and Syria.”

Officials also said that “the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) discussed with US Central Command the adjustments that should be made to the US force posture in the Middle East.”

Last April 2024, Iran launched missiles and drones from its territory and the territories of its proxies towards Israel.

The attack was in response to an Israeli strike that targeted an Iranian diplomatic headquarters in Damascus days earlier, killing senior Revolutionary Guard officers.

Israel continues to be on high alert in preparation for a possible Iranian response after the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran, and the leader of the Lebanese factions, Fouad Shukr, who was killed in an Israeli raid on the southern suburb of Beirut, in addition to the Israeli announcement of the killing of the leader of the Palestinian factions, Muhammad al-Deif.

The New York Times quoted Iranian officials as saying that Iranian military leaders “are considering a joint attack with drones and missiles on military targets around Tel Aviv and Haifa, but they will be careful to avoid strikes on civilian targets.”
