NRA leadership: US gun lobbyists convicted of corruption

New York jury finds Wayne LaPierre and other executives guilty. Millions were squandered on personal luxury goods.

  • Wayne LaPierre and other NRA executives were found guilty by a New York jury of financial misconduct and corruption.

  • LaPierre is said to have used around $5.4 million from the NRA for personal purposes such as vacations and luxury flights.

  • The NRA and its leaders have been condemned for abusing their nonprofit status and submitting false documentation.

A jury in New York has found former top US gun lobbyist Wayne LaPierre and other executives of the influential NRA gun group guilty of financial misconduct and corruption.

Several US media outlets reported this unanimously on Friday (local time). After a week of deliberations, the jury concluded that former NRA chairman LaPierre had used association funds for vacations, luxury flights for his relatives and yacht tours.

The jury found that LaPierre had wasted around $5.4 million (almost €5 million) from the NRA. According to the information, he has already paid back some of the money. The rest should follow.

NRA itself was accused

The jury also found that the group’s former treasurer and the head of the legal department had not fulfilled their duties to the non-profit organization. The NRA itself was also indicted and convicted of ignoring whistleblower complaints and submitting false documents to the state.

The NRA has non-profit status in the USA and is therefore subject to special requirements for the use of donations, charity and accounting. It is considered an extremely conservative organization with very great political influence.

The 74-year-old LaPierre had led the NRA since 1991, but announced shortly before the trial began in New York in January that he would resign for health reasons.
