The legal battle between Hollywood actor Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard, also known as Amber Heard, is endless, this time in court in the United States.
Depp, 58, is suing his ex-wife Heard for $50 million following losing the first round of a lawsuit in the U.K. for an op-ed in the Washington Post The article claims to be a victim of domestic violence. In response, Heard countersued Depp for $100 million.
The libel case in Virginia will be broadcast live and 120 witnesses will be called, including some close friends of celebrities on both sides. Let’s take a look at which celebrities will be on the show.
Elon Musk
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is expected to testify as Heard’s witness.
Heard and Musk were in a relationship from 2016-2018.
Musk had offered to offer Heard “24/7 protection” from Depp, according to text messages read out during the defamation trial in London. Musk’s name was brought up during the trial.
James Franco
American actor James Franco is also expected to appear as Heard’s witness. Heard is said to have confided in Franco regarding bruising on his body following allegations of a fight with Depp.
Paul Bettany
Paul Bettany is expected to appear as Depp’s witness following the two had text messages in 2013.
Bettany called Depp the “kindest, gentlest” man he’s ever known.
Ellen Barkin
Ellen Barkin and Depp dated briefly in the ’90s. But Barkin will testify for Heard in court.
Depp said that his relationship with Ba Jin was informal at the time, so Ba Jin held a grudge once morest him, possibly out of revenge.
How to get to this point?
The trial took place in Virginia because it is where the Washington Post is located and where the newspaper is published.
But others believe that Depp’s team has a better chance of winning a case here than in California, where the two live.
The high-profile case is expected to reveal more private details of the relationship between the two, with both sides accusing the other of abuse.
The story of Depp and Heard
Depp and Heard, who starred in “Pirates of the Caribbean”, met on the set of “The Rum Diary” (also known as “The Rum Diary”), and the two began dating in early 2012 a few years later and married in 2015 .
But the marriage lasted only 15 months before the two divorced. Heard filed for divorce and a restraining order and showed her bruised cheeks in a Los Angeles court.
Heard said her ex-husband Depp attacked her “violently” and smashed her phone in her face “with enough force”. Other allegations of harassment include: “emotional, verbal and physical abuse”. “Anger, hostility, insults and threatening attacks,” she wrote in court documents.
The judge granted a temporary restraining order, but just hours before the civil trial once morest the injunction began, they issued a joint statement saying the dispute between the two had been settled.
But then in 2018, Heard wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post describing his experience as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”
She did not name her ex-husband or any other perpetrators.
But Depp’s lawyers said the three sentences in her article constituted defamation, undermined Depp’s career and caused “immeasurable” damage to Depp’s reputation.
Is it the same thing as the British trial?
In 2018 — before Heard’s article was published — Depp sued News Corp Newspapers Ltd, publisher of British tabloid The Sun, for defamation over an article they called Depp a “wife beater” “.
While the legal battle was between Depp and The Sun, the three-week trial in London looked more like a feud between Depp and Heard.
Depp lost the case in 2020.
In 2021, Depp had tried unsuccessfully to overturn the verdict.
The judge ruled that Heard’s “vast majority” of abuse allegations might be proven to meet civil standards – meaning abuse was more likely to occur.
The Virginia trial continues.
