A senior Pentagon official said that the US military is rushing to send new supplies of air defenses, ammunition and other security assistance to Israel to help it respond to an unprecedented attack launched by Hamas at the weekend.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to Pentagon reporters, added: “The planes have already taken off. We are increasing our support for Israel… We remain in constant contact with our counterparts in Israel to identify their most urgent requirements and then meet them.”
The United States has not yet provided details on the size of Israel’s requests for security assistance. But the US defense official said that Washington is making contact with the defense industry to expedite pending Israeli orders and is looking at US military stocks to help fill Israeli gaps.
The official also dispelled concerns that the United States might find it difficult to supply weapons to Israel at the same time as it transfers weapons to Ukraine.
“We are able to continue our support for Ukraine and Israel and maintain our global preparedness,” the official said.
On the other hand, the Pentagon confirmed that American and Israeli military leaders are discussing plans to strengthen the presence of American forces in the region and enhance regional deterrence efforts.
