The migrant community in Arizona (USA) received a double blow with the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections and the approval at the polls of one of the most severe immigration proposals that criminalizes irregular migration.
This is undoubtedly a hard blow for our migrant community in Arizona, however we are not going to let them trample on our rights,” Isabel García, director of the Human Rights Coalition in Arizona, told EFE about a new term for former President Trump. (2017-2021).
The Republican leader has promised mass deportations and reviving other of his controversial policies, such as the construction of the border wall.
The activist also fears the ecological impact of the border wall, as well as the separation of families.
However, for García Trump’s victory was not a surprise because the Democrats “failed” by not defending the migrant community and highlighting the multiple studies on their economic contributions to the United States.
Dora Rodríguez, director of Compassionate Borders, an organization dedicated to assisting migrants on the Arizona border and placing water in the desert, fears that federal persecution and harassment against pro-immigrant groups will return.
The new Trump administration “could further increase the presence of armed civilian militias that feel they have the right and support of the Republican government to intimidate and harass migrants and volunteers who provide humanitarian aid,” he said.
Rodríguez stressed that there are currently an average of 1,000 deportations a day at the Arizona border, something that could increase under Trump.
“I fear that this will also increase deaths on the border, because now migrants, instead of voluntarily surrendering to the Border Patrol, will seek to take dangerous roads in the desert to avoid detection,” said the activist.
He assured that Trump’s victory does not end the fundamental causes of irregular migration, “so we will continue to see migrants at the border.”
A greater threat
On the other hand, voters yesterday approved proposal 314, one of the most severe state laws against irregular migration in the country, which makes it a crime to cross the border with Mexico irregularly and grants immigration powers to the police.
This law is much worse than SB1070, because it was approved by voters it is practically impossible to repeal it in the state legislature,” Lydia Guzmán, representative of the Chicanos por la Causa organization in Arizona, who worked hard to promote the Latino vote, told EFE. .
Guzmán considers it dangerous to grant “immunity” to police officers when they apply this law, which could trigger multiple violations of civil rights and discrimination against Latino citizens.
Proposition 314, approved with 63% of the vote, allows police departments to arrest undocumented migrants as well as enforce federal immigration laws.
At the same time it grants the power to state (non-immigration) judges to issue deportation orders.
Proposition 314 also establishes sanctions against undocumented migrants who present false documentation to obtain public benefits or apply for employment.
“This will undoubtedly affect the children of undocumented migrants, American citizens who could lose their benefits because their parents will be afraid to apply for benefits to which they are fully entitled, which means they will be left without health insurance and will go hungry. ”Guzmán said.

The article discusses the ramifications of recent political developments in the United States, particularly the victory of Donald Trump and the approval of Proposition 314 in Arizona. Activists express concern over the potential increase in deportations, which are currently averaging 1,000 daily at the Arizona border. They fear that a harsher enforcement climate under Trump may force migrants to take more dangerous routes to avoid detection, potentially leading to an increase in deaths.
Lydia Guzmán, a representative from the Chicanos por la Causa organization, emphasized that Proposition 314 is a severe law against irregular migration, making it a crime to cross the border illegally and giving police greater immigration enforcement powers. She believes this law is more detrimental than the previous SB1070 law, stating its voter-approved nature makes it difficult to repeal in the state legislature. The law could lead to discrimination and civil rights violations against Latino citizens, as it allows police to arrest undocumented migrants and enables non-immigration judges to issue deportation orders.
The article calls attention to the potential threats to civil rights posed by these legal changes and emphasizes the ongoing challenges related to immigration policies in the U.S.
