US lawmakers announce plan to ban energy imports from Russia

Prominent US lawmakers today announced a plan for legislation to ban the import of Russian energy products and suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, according to a statement from the bipartisan group.

“Taking these measures will send a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that his war is unacceptable and that the United States stands firmly with our NATO allies,” the lawmakers said, according to Archyde.com.

The statement was issued by House Tax Balance and Budget Committee Chairman Richard Neil and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, both Democrats, and their Republican counterparts Kevin Brady and Mike Crabow.

According to the lawmakers’ statement, the legislation would give US President Joe Biden the authority to increase tariffs on goods from Russia and Belarus, and would require US Trade Representative Catherine Taye, to seek to suspend Russia’s participation in the World Trade Organization, and push to stop the proposed accession of Belarus to the WTO. .
