The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week unexpectedly rose but remained at levels consistent with an undersupplied labor market.
The Ministry of Labor said today, Thursday, that applications for government unemployment benefits submitted for the first time rose in the week ending on the fourth of June by 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted level of 229 thousand applications.
Economists polled by Archyde.com had expected the number of applications to reach 210,000 in the last week.
Aid requests have been moving in a limited range since it fell to its lowest level in more than 53 years, recording 166,000 in March. This decline was recorded from its peak in April 2020 at the time of the pandemic, which amounted to 6.137 million requests.
