US-Israeli Differences Over War with Hamas: Biden’s Stance and Netanyahu’s Response

Joe Biden has publicly acknowledged differences between the United States and Israeli authorities over the war with Hamas. According to the US President, CNN reports, Israel, by continuing to bomb the Gaza Strip, is losing the support of the international community, and the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu should change its approach to the war with Hamas.

Now, Biden said at a meeting with donors for his 2024 re-election campaign, Israel enjoys unprecedented support around the world, but is “beginning to lose it due to indiscriminate bombing.”

The US President believes Netanyahu should change his policy. However, according to Biden, this will not be easy to do due to the position of members of his government – “the most conservative in the history of Israel.”

Earlier, the Israeli prime minister also publicly acknowledged for the first time differences with the United States, his main ally, over the future of the Gaza Strip following the end of the war. “Yes, we have differences regarding the ‘day following Hamas’, and I hope that we can overcome them,” said a statement released by the Israeli Prime Minister’s press office.

Netanyahu stressed that he would not allow Israel to repeat the “Oslo mistake,” referring to the Norwegian agreements that allowed the creation of the Palestinian National Authority, under whose control the Gaza Strip and the West Bank were transferred.

Since 2007, the Gaza Strip has been under de facto control of Hamas, while the other Palestinian territory, the West Bank, is still governed by the Palestinian National Authority, led by Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas. The United States advocates that following the defeat of Hamas, the Gaza Strip returns to the control of the Palestinian National Authority.

The Israeli authorities do not agree with this plan. “Gaza will not be Hamastan or Fatahstan,” Netanyahu said.

Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing regarding 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages. The Israel Defense Forces responded to the attack by launching airstrikes into the Gaza Strip and then entered Palestinian territory, launching a ground operation.

Hamas-controlled Gaza Ministry of Health assertsthat since the beginning of the Israeli operation more than 18 thousand Palestinians have been killed and regarding 50 thousand have been wounded.

On December 12, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian pause in hostilities in the Gaza Strip. The resolution was supported by three quarters of the UN member countries.
