Iran is using covert social media and related influence operations in an effort to undermine former President Donald Trump’s candidacy, a U.S. intelligence official said in an updated threat assessment of the November election. U.S. intelligence has “observed Tehran working to influence the presidential election, likely because Iranian leaders want to avoid an outcome they believe could increase tensions with the United States,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a statement.
Recent Iranian influence activity has taken the form of “secret social media accounts and related activities,” the official said in a press conference. Already in the 2020 election, Iran “conducted a multi-pronged covert influence campaign aimed at weakening former President Trump’s reelection prospects,” according to a declassified U.S. intelligence report. Tehran is doing everything it can to ensure Kamala Harris wins and stop the former president.
