The US House of Representatives on Saturday temporarily prevented a government shutdown. The disaster was averted by adopting a proposal from Republican Kevin McCarthy for emergency funding.
The bridging period is 45 days. The Senate must still approve the proposal and President Joe Biden must quickly sign it.
The Democrats, in the minority in the House of Representatives, overwhelmingly supported the Republican chairman’s proposal. No fewer than 209 of them were in favor, accompanied by 126 Republicans. Previously, the hardliners in his party still bothered McCarthy.
If no solution had been found, the federal government would have gone into partial lockdown at midnight on Saturday (local time in Washington). Then only the most necessary payments might be made. Many civil servants were left without a salary until an agreement was reached on a new budget.
