The US House of Representatives removed its president, Republican Kevin McCarthy, as a result of a vote following one of his co-partisans presented a motion with this objective on Monday night.

The decision ended with 216 votes in favor and 210 once morest.

In this way, the politician has become the first president in the history of the House to be removed by a motion of this type.

The last time House lawmakers took a vote to try to oust their leader was in 1910, CNN reports.

Not only was the vote pushed by the Republican Party, but eight members of McCarthy’s own party also voted once morest him.

Republicans who supported impeachment were Andy Biggs, Ken Buck, Tim Burchett, Eli Crane, Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, Nancy Mace and Matt Rosendale.

From now on, it will be Republican Representative Patrick McHenry who will temporarily lead the House of Representatives.

He is one of McCarthy’s main allies, who added his name to the list that he had to deliver to the secretary in case his position became vacant.

McHenry was named speaker ‘pro tempore,’ meaning he can only recess the House, adjourn and recognize presidential nominations.

The impeachment initiative was proposed by Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, who previously accused McCarthy of having reached a “secret side deal” on Ukraine with US President Joe Biden.

After presenting the motion, Gaetz told the media that he has “enough Republicans to make one of two things happen next week: that Kevin McCarthy not be speaker of the House of Representatives, or that he is speaker of the House of Representatives working under will of the Democrats.”

McCarthy himself believed he would survive Gaetz’s actions to remove him. Thus, a few minutes following the presentation of the motion became known, McCarthy reacted ironically, publishing on the social network X: “Go ahead!”

Previously, the US House of Representatives and Senate approved a 45-day government funding bill proposed by the Republican Party.

The bill does not contain any financial aid to Ukraine, but the White House urged McCarthy to submit another document providing the funds.
