US halts bomb shipments to Israel to signal concern over Rafah invasion

The US government has halted the delivery of 3,500 bombs to Israel, concerned regarding their possible use in Rafah.

According to CNN, the southernmost part of Gaza is home to more than a million displaced people from other parts of the Palestinian enclave.

The seized cargo includes 1,800 2,000-pound (907-kilogram) bombs and 1,700 500-pound (226-kilogram) bombs, according to information provided to the news channel by an unidentified U.S. official.

The informant said the concern was mainly regarding the final use of the 1,800 heavier bombs and “the impact they might have in dense urban environments as we have seen in other parts of Gaza«.

CNN reported over the weekend that a shipment of ammunition to Israel had been stopped, but the reason was unclear.

The US government has repeatedly spoken out once morest the announced invasion of Rafah and called for a comprehensive plan to protect the more than one million civilians who have taken refuge in the city in order to prevent an expansion of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza as a result of the war declared by Israel once morest Hamas following the attack carried out on October 7 by the Islamist movement in Israeli territory.

Israeli forces on Tuesday took control of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and cut off the passage of people and goods, while continuing to bombard the area.

U.S. State Department spokesman Matt Miller said the military action appears to be “a limited operation” for now, but further steps will be needed to determine its scope.

«They have said, I think quite clearly, that it is no secret that they want to carry out a major military operation there. We have made it clear that we oppose such an operation.“, he added.
