US Government: Those who cross the border illegally do not have the right to seek asylum

He mentioned that they are “under a judicial obligation to implement Title 42 authority at the border.”

Blas Núñez-Neto, Acting Undersecretary for Border Policy and Immigration at the US Department of Homeland Security, said Thursday that “individuals who appear and cross the border illegally do not have the right to seek asylum and may be returned to Mexico.”

He mentioned this after the government of Joe Biden announced this Wednesday a new immigration program for Venezuelans, in which they will allow the entry of 24,000 Venezuelans as long as they have a sponsor in that country and meet various requirements.

They warned that if they do not comply with them they will be deported to Mexico.

Given this, the official argued that these are due to the fact that they are “under a judicial obligation to implement the authority of Title 42 at the border, and that authority has priority over our immigration authorities,” published Monitoreamos.

“The people who cross into Panama and Mexico are not going to be eligible, to those who are on the move, I want to say clearly that they stay where they are, that they do not enter Mexico and do not try to cross our border with Mexico or they will not be eligible through this legal process that has many benefits,” Nuñez-Neto said in a telephone press conference.

“We want to tell all Venezuelans who are contemplating such a dangerous journey or who are on the road today, not to continue north because they will not be able to enter the border with the United States,” he emphasized.

When asked if the United States has a way to guarantee that these people who are returned to Mexico are not later deported to Venezuela, where their lives could be at risk, the official evaded the question and attributed the responsibility to the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“The Government of Mexico obviously has its obligations under international law. That is a question that is actually for the Mexican government. I know that they have important processes to verify that if they are going to return someone (not) someone who needs asylum, ”he said.
