With Biden and Trump having secured their parties’ nominations to run for the presidency, a Reuters poll captures how Americans perceive this electoral showdown between the two gladiators.
Americans are deeply divided. Two in five believe the other party’s candidate is a threat to democracy.
57% of Democrats are voting for Biden to keep Trump out. Only 30% vote for Biden for his positions.
In fact, this percentage is much lower among African-Americans, an electoral base that the Democrats generally win and especially Biden helped him get elected last time.
But a 64% of college graduates, one of Donald Trump’s big weaknesses, college graduates and suburban women now say they support Biden so Trump doesn’t come out now.
72% of Democrats and 78% of Republicans are concerned regarding the influence on politics of unelected officials. That is, people who seem to adopt Trump’s rhetoric regarding the “deep state” that fights democracy.
81% of Republicans and 41% of Democrats believe that immigrants make life difficult for Americans.
At the same time, 9 out of 10 Democrats consider the issue of abortion important.
After the court’s decision last summer to stop being a constitutional right, while the corresponding percentage among Republicans is 50%.
It is no coincidence that we also had the first visit of an American vice president today by Kamala Harris to an abortion clinic, precisely to emphasize that the Republicans are a threat to this constitutional right of women.
