US dismisses charges against Alex Saab

The United States government presented a motion to dismiss the federal charges against Alex Saab, an official linked to the administration of Nicolás Maduro who He was serving a sentence in North American territory for money laundering and corruption. The US government’s request was filed with the Federal Court for the Southern District of the state of Floridawhere the arrest of the alleged diplomat.

The measure asks “dismiss without prejudice the indictment against defendant Alex Nain Saab Morán, and only this defendant, pursuant to a grant of Executive Clemency, signed by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., on December 15, 2023.”

The document clarifies that the government communicated its decision to Saab’s lawyers, to which the accused did not object.

Last January, Republican senators urged the United States Department of Justice to reveal the file with the investigation into Saabconsidered front man of Nicolás Maduro and who was imprisoned in Florida for money laundering.

Saab, qualified as a diplomat by the Maduro administration, was released from a federal prison in Miami last December as part of a prisoner exchange between Venezuela and the United States.
