The missiles were launched from territory controlled by Houthi rebels, close to Iran, the US Central Command (Centcom) said on social media.
According to Centcom, the destroyers USS Gravely and USS Laboon responded to a request for assistance from Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged Danish container ship, which reported being struck by a missile in the Red Sea.
During this relief operation, the USS Gravely shot down missiles that had been fired “in the direction of American military ships,” Centcom added.
Since the start of the war on October 7 between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis, who control a large part of Yemen, have increased attacks in the Red Sea once morest ships they consider “linked to Israel”, in solidarity with the Palestinian territory bombed and besieged.
Israel’s first ally, the United States patrols this strategic area of the globe with other countries, in an international coalition to protect maritime traffic from Houthi attacks.
