For weeks, the Democratic and Republican party leaders argued over the 2024 budget.

Now a compromise has apparently been reached that is intended to avert the impending shutdown.

The spending cap of $1,590 billion means cuts in the civilian sector. The lion’s share goes to the military.
Almost two weeks before another deadline expires, the divided party leaders in the US Congress have reached a fundamental agreement in the budget dispute. Congress and the Senate had argued for weeks regarding the amount and type of spending in the new fiscal year. Now Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader, announced on Sunday an agreement on the level of US government spending in the new year – an important step towards a standstill, the dreaded shutdown avoid.
While the agreement on spending levels breaks a logjam that had stalled the budget-making process, it does not entirely eliminate the risk of a stalemate as the first of two January 19 deadline approaches, when some parts of the budget will be set Government running out of money.
886 billion for the military
“The bipartisan agreement on overall appropriations clears the way for Congress to act in the next few weeks to maintain key funding priorities for the American people and avoid a government shutdown,” Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said, according to NBC in a statement.
The deal would call for a total spending level of $1.59 trillion in fiscal year 2024. This reflects the two-party budget deal negotiated last year by President Joe Biden and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The breakdown is $886 billion for the military and $704 billion for non-defense spending, Johnson said. “The result means real savings for American taxpayers and real cuts in federal bureaucracy,” Johnson said.
