The USA is confident regarding the continuity of bilateral relations under the new Taiwanese government. The US commitment to the island is “unwavering, principled and bipartisan,” former US national security adviser Stephen Hadley told Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday. The United States stands “on the side of its friends.” The US delegation then met future President Lai Ching-te (William Lai).
Taiwan’s democracy is a shining example to the world, said Hadley. “We look forward to the continuity of relations between Taiwan and the United States under the new administration and to joint efforts to maintain peace and stability between the two countries.”
Lai described the visit as evidence of “the close and stable partnership between Taiwan and the United States.” “I am grateful for the US’s strong support for Taiwan’s democracy,” Lai said following the meeting on Monday. Tsai called the visit “very significant” and also cited it as evidence of the close partnership between Washington and Taipei.
US President Joe Biden sent an unofficial delegation to the island claimed by China as a sign of support for the new government. Lai of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was expected to win Saturday’s presidential election and will take office on May 20. During the election campaign, the 64-year-old announced that he would continue Tsai’s anti-Beijing course.
China said following the election that the result would not prevent China’s “reunification.” Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province. The Taiwanese government rejects the Beijing government’s claim to sovereignty. Western states had previously drawn sharp criticism from China by congratulating the Taiwanese election winner.
