A US commission warns of a nuclear war with Russia and China. Vladimir Putin dismisses it. The Kremlin propaganda is already in full swing.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin spoke out in an interview about a possible conflict between the United States of America on the one hand and Russia and China on the other. “We are preparing for war, but we want peace,” said the 71-year-old despot on the program “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin.”
In an interview with Russian propagandist Pavel Zarubin, Putin commented on the recommendation of a bipartisan body of the US Congress (Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States) to prepare for a two-front war.
The US Commission presented a report on Thursday in which it advocated that the US should consider war with the major nuclear powers Russia and China in its military strategic considerations. The background to the considerations is, among other things, the increasingly close cooperation between China and Russia since the start of the Ukraine war.
The commission therefore recommends that the US government further expand the US conventional armed forces, strengthen strategic alliances with its allies and accelerate the program to modernize the US nuclear arsenal. The report is likely to further escalate tensions in the conflict between the major nuclear powers.
Putin, the savior of the Global South?
Diplomatic relations between Russia, China and the USA have been at a new low since the start of the Ukraine war. Vladimir Putin has announced a visit to Beijing at the end of this week. According to the Kremlin, the program will also include a one-on-one meeting between Putin and China’s head of state Xi Jinping. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has been in the Chinese capital since Sunday for preparatory consultations between the allies.
“The attention of the international community is very high,” emphasized Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to the state news agency Tass, “because both Russia and China play a very important role in international affairs. And their importance is growing.”
The cooperation with China, which according to experts is by no means one of equal partners – Putin is too dependent on the goodwill of the communist regime in Beijing – fits perfectly with Putin’s new propaganda strategy. Because he has recently been trying to present himself as the protector of the interests of the countries of the Global South: against the demon USA. Violence, if necessary in the form of nuclear weapons, is a core element of this doctrine. By resisting Washington’s influence – for example, according to the Kremlin’s interpretation, with the war in Ukraine – states like Russia and others acted in self-defense against an overwhelming enemy.

On Monday, Putin attacked the United States as a “colonial power.” America believes it is a first-class country while it views other countries’ citizens as second-class, Putin said in an interview with China Media Corporation. “These are the rudiments of colonial thinking, nothing else.”
Putin as a champion against the supposed US hegemony? With this Robin Hood story he has already achieved considerable PR success in many countries south of the hemisphere, for example in Africa. But China also appears to be a natural ally of Russia in this context, because Xi Jinping also sees the USA as an archenemy.
